a bear a day

Friday, 1 December 2017

I'm really excited to reveal a little project I've been working on for quite a few months now. You see, I like bears. A lot. Some might say I love them. So, I decided to create 90 bear illustrations as a way to stretch myself with illustration styles, and grow my skill set (highly recommend growing skill sets). Above and beyond all that, though, is that creating these little images made me very happy.

And now, I'm putting my fuzzy little friends up for auction...

One bear.

Every day.

For 90 days.

1 January to 31 March 2018

Original watercolour/ink paintings on A5 or A6 watercolour paper (vast majority on A6).

Auction daily on Instagram—abearaday90

And... FREE post worldwide!

Anyone can bid on the bears, and yes, postage is free. The entire series of 90 auctions will be held on the abearaday90 Instagram page (click image below to access). You will need to have an Instagram account to bid.
https://www.instagram.com/abearaday90/

How it works
  • Each new bear illustration will be posted to the abearaday90 Instagram page, commencing 1 January 2018 and ending 31 March 2018.
  • Each illustration will appear by 9am AEDT (at the latest) of each day.
  • The auction will last 24 hours, and will end at 9am AEDT on the DAY AFTER the illustration was posted.
  • Time is Australian Eastern Daylight Time (i.e. Sydney time).
  • All illustrations will commence at $45 (Australian dollars).
  • Bids can be made in the comments section of the illustration you'd like. Simply type the amount you'd like to bid, e.g. $67. Only bid increments of $1 or more are allowed.
  • The highest bid posted by 8.59am on the day after the illustration was posted, will win. Once the clock ticks over to 9am, bids close. I will post a comment to confirm the winner as soon as I am able, and I will direct message the winner with payment information.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Payment must be received by Paypal (only) within 24 hours of winning the image, along with your postage address. If you have an issue with paying, you would need to be in touch within those 24 hours, as if payment isn't received, the illustration will be offered to the next highest bidder.

I hope you have fun with this line-up of original bear artworks. It was a hoot creating them, and there's some real corkers for sale. It's going to be fun to surprise you each and every day for 90 days!

Email me if you have any questions.

Australia Map launch wrap-up

Sunday, 26 November 2017

It was an absolute hoot to launch my Australia Map this morning at Harry Hartog in Woden (book launches are, like, sooooo passe). The kids huddled in to be taken on an Aus-wide tour, then it was under the pump to answer 20 questions about Australia (with lots of prompting). They actually did really well, and won some furry prizes and some prints of animals from the map.

Merry Everything window reveal!

Monday, 13 November 2017

What a gorgeous morning we had at Harry Hartog Westfield Woden, at the unveiling of my Merry Everything! window. We enjoyed a countdown and reveal (thanks to little helpers Ayla and Zoe) and then bubbles, gingerbread and candy canes. An impromptu book signing saw almost all book copies evaporate, and it was fantastic to catch up with some lovely people.

October happenings

more on this, below

Boo!

Just kidding.

I've actually become a bit of a Halloween 'scrooge' now that the kids are older. Not because I don't like it. I do. It's fabulous fun. Our suburb here in Canberra caught a little Halloween fever a few years ago, with mini ghouls haunting the streets, but it seems to have died down now. Nevertheless, I leave a creepy bowl outside our front door with freakish treats inside.

I guess I'm a bit over Halloween because it's just 'another' thing to do, you know? And to think, I used to decorate the entire house. AND Easter. And I'd hang streamers and puff up balloons at the mere whiff of any other festive occasion. Now, all that energy is reserved for Christmas.

If you've read my blog, you'll know I'm a Christmas Nut (perhaps a Brazil nut--sometimes Macadamia), and I've been particularly impatient this year. Not sure why. I want to try a new advent calendar and I also want to totally reinvent my decorating scheme. I'm going for silver and green, black and white this year. Here are some finds from Provincial Home Living and Adairs. Can you believe how gorgeous? Look at that leafy ribbon! and I'm [almond] nuts over the pine cone tree/ornaments, and the wreath. Gasp.

And here is one of many pompom garlands I've been dying to make. All white. And the little mini trees--I found them on ebay. I'm using them for this year's advent calendar.

Australia Map advance copy

Sunday, 15 October 2017

So exciting to FINALLY see my map with Hardie Grant Travel as a final, real life, trooly rooly map, in a tube and everything! It's been printed on the most beautiful writeable, wipeable paper and when you unfurl it, it doesn't stay coiled in a tight fist--it lies almost flat. Heaven!

There are, quite literally, NO spare walls in my house except this curved one at our entryway. It's like it was made for this map. Look how huge it is. It's HUGE!

Australia: Illustrated Map will be released this December, and will be available in stores Australia-wide, and online. I'll be having a map launch--yes, you read it right--we might have to crack a bottle of champagne against it--at Harry Hartog Woden (Canberra) on Sunday 26 November, so whack that in your diary, and check my EVENTS page for updates on how you can RSVP.

Have you ever been to a map launch? I haven't! What will I wear...

Dior exhibition

Wednesday, 11 October 2017

my H&M skirt! seriously!

Weekend before last, I headed to Melbourne for the launch of Merry Everything! (you can see the wrap-up here). It was an action-packed long weekend, catching up with beautiful people, and one of the absolute highlights (along with The Book of Mormon) was the Dior Exhibition at the NGV.

I promised a peek at my pics, so here they are. I also mentioned in my launch wrap-up post that I'd bought a skirt from H&M half an hour before seeing the Dior line-up--and was shocked to see an almost identical skirt in a Dior dress (and I'd thought 'how Dior!' when I bought the skirt). You'll see it in the image above.

My new publisher, Lisa Berryman from HarperCollins, was also seeing the exhibition that morning with a friend, so we met for coffee afterwards. We both marvelled at the gum nut head gear on one of the mannequins (see if you can spot it below), especially as we're working on a book on May Gibbs!

Enjoy this sartorial lust-fest. I'm still swooning.

merry EVERYTHING! book launch wrap-up

Monday, 2 October 2017

It was so nice to be 'home' in Melbourne this past weekend. I really, really miss this beautiful city, and although our trip was a whirlwind, it was enriching and so very special, filled with fabulous experiences and people.

We arrived last Thursday, checked in to our superb little North Fitzroy apartment, and had dinner with the fam. Then Friday morning, I leapt on the tram for the city. Forgetting it was an AFL public holiday, I sat, bereft, outside H&M, awaiting its (late) opening, then barrelled inside and picked up a few scrumptious bits, including the the most 'Dior' fairy-floss-pink layered skirt (only one left, in my size!).

I then hightailed it to the National Gallery of Victoria to see the Dior Exhibition. Gasp. Fast-forward through the following pics if this is not your thing, but how could it NOT be? It was just, just--no words. Absolutely brilliantly done, too, with creations spanning many decades, including many eye-popping vintage pieces. And it was a little bit freakish to see my pink H&M skirt at the exhibition!! (albeit in dress form, below). Stay tuned for a blog post with a billion eye-popping photos.

KBR has a new look!

Tuesday, 26 September 2017

Kids' Book Review has been loooooong overdue for an upgrade, and it's been tough to carve out the time to create something of late. I'm working on a series of bears right now, so I simply added another five to my cache... et voila - here are your new KBR hosts. A bevy of bears. (And yes, I know the koala isn't technically a bear, but he's OUR bear, so there.)

Do stop by and check it out, and maybe read up on some sensational kids' books at the same time.
